I share my weekly/monthly plan for adding website content and how I use it to get traffic to my website.
I have these monthly goals, which I spread over 20 days every month. This leaves me with weekends to catch up if I fall behind, or to do other things, or take the weekend off.
Every month I will:
Write 2 webpage articles.
Write 2 articles for submission to article directories.
Submit 2 articles to article directories.
Submit my site to directories.
Visit blogs and forums and leave posts with a url in the signature file.
Here's the reasoning behind all this. Until my knitting blog is in the search engines, it exists, in all it's beauty, in a vacuum of sorts. Unless I tell someone about it directly, for all intents and purposes it is as if it doesn't exist.
I could submit the blog to the search engines, but in many instances that costs money, money I don't want to spend until the websites are earning it themselves. Plus spreading my link around the web is viral advertising. People read my posts and articles and post my articles on their own websites and blogs. Eventually my links are all over the web.
If I put my link on other websites, ones that are already indexed in the engines, then the search bots visit those sites, find my links, and follows them. It's as if those sites told the bots, "Look, there's a site over there that I think is worth linking to." So the bots find you by invitation as well as recommendation. The higher the page rank and search engine results pages of the recommending website, the higher the value your website gets from the engines.
Submitting articles to directories is only one way to get those back links. You can post an article or a link to an article in web forums, or you can approach a webmaster directly with an article to post to his website or newsletter.
However you get those back links, the search engine robots will find your website, return, and see that you are adding content regularly and often.
I took all my article directory lists and arranged the directories by Google Page Rank. Then, one at a time, I went through them to submit my first article. What an ordeal; using other people's lists is really a pain in the butt. It becomes obvious right off the hop that these lists have never been used by a human, or at least not for submitting articles.
Many no longer accept articles, or never did, or no longer have a high page rank, or don't even have articles on them, or the articles are only written by the webmaster.
So this list of 20 article directories that are currently accepting articles is worth its weight in lattes. Even the Page Ranks are accurate. I'll add to the list as I find more.

All of the above urls have been tested by me and they work.
I can find blogs to post to by searching blog directories for my keywords. I'll find keyword-rich forums by doing a Google search for the same words: knitting + forum, free + knitting + patterns + forum, and so on.
