The best way to increase your affiliate earnings is to target your content to your traffic. Let's say that you did your homework when you were planning your website. Some people say, choose a profitable product first, others say follow your passion, find a niche, then find a product.
Either way, if you researched and planned properly, your website is a tight, small niche. By small I'm not referring to the number of visitors you get, I'm referring to the scope of your site. You can't hope to compete with the big boys - Walmart, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, etc. You have to carve a small specialty niche out of the entire pie, one small enough that you can dominate.
This doesn't mean you can't ultimately sit at the top of your own empire, it means you start with one small niche, then you can add others. One at a time.
You've defined your niche, you have your website, but you still aren't reaching your financial goals. The first thing you need to do is restudy your traffic and make sure you're offering them what they want.
How do you do this? One way is to ask. Develop a survey and offer everyone who completes one something they'd really like, for free. Maybe it's a discount, or something they can use with their product.
Ask customers about their experience on your site. This can be very brief - did you find what you wanted? If not, what were you looking for. Was it easy to find what you wanted? How could your browsing/information-seeking experience be better?
But don't stop there. You should also spend some time getting inside their heads. This is pure thinking time. Imagine that you are someone needing your product. What are your issues, needs, concerns, problems, hardships, handicaps, emotional needs, what do you do for a living, what do you like to do in your spare time, what are your hobbies, politics, charitable donations, plans, dreams and beliefs?
You won't get one answer. On the other hand, you can't say that your target market is everyone. No matter how big or small your plans are, you have to start with just one person. Maybe this person is a college student right out of high school. Think out a total profile for this person.
Except that you say your product also appeals to single mothers with two jobs. Fine. Then work out a profile for this person as well.
For every profile, you'll develop a slightly different or dramatically different promotional approach.
If you still need to research in order to better match your affiliate products to your traffic, find blogs and forums that target your market. Read, read, and read some more. You're not wasting time, you're getting under the skin (in a good way) of your target audience. Before you answer a single forum or blog post, ask questions. Your aim isn't selling, it's gathering information.
However, if you carefully craft a non-intrusive but intriguing signature file to include at the bottom of every forum post that points to a relevant page on your website, you will simultaneously generate back links and traffic to your website.
Once you've been a member of the forum for a while, you can offer information, but by then you will be a familiar, trusted presence.
When you read a blog post that you think would interest your readers, write about it, including a contextual link, on your website, then leave a comment in the blog saying you have done that. A savvy blogger may return the favor with a contextual link to your site.
