There are two questions that I receive more than any others, the first is, how do I choose a website concept, and the second is, how do I know what to write about?
I'll deal with the web site concept question first. There are various answers to this, depending on who you ask. I will try to explain why there are such differing answers.
When you start your own business, you will spend a lot of your time and energy working on yourself. You will study, learn, and apply your learning to your business. You will promote yourself - as someone trustworthy, knowledgeable, an expert. Sometimes I go for days without writing and have to remind myself to stop studying and do what pays the bills - write!
You will save a lot of time and give yourself the direction you need if you understand yourself, your style, your likes and dislikes, your strengths and weaknesses. In order to decide what direction you want to take your business in, you have to understand your capabilities and inabilities.
Some people say follow your passion when developing your affiliate website concept, others say find where the money is, and others say find out what people are looking for - information, products, services, tools.
If you are familiar and successful already with Adwords or other pay-per-click campaigns, or have a good head for numbers, you may want to find a popular product and promote a sales page or affiliate link that way. If you like to write and write reasonably well, you may want to build a content website and promote via article marketing, email marketing, or other online advertising.
There are important things to know about both of these methods. In regards to each of them, if you need money right now, get a regular day job. It is possible to start making money quickly with Adwords, but you have to have money to spend, and its risky. Building a content website and promoting in the above listed ways takes time, months.
Now about the passion. If you are building rapid-fire Adwords campaigns, one after another, analyzing results, deleting campaigns that don't make you money, you don't need to love or even like your products. You will learn to love what makes you money. You will search for what's hot, what is getting a lot of searches, what people are paying good money on Adwords to promote, and THEN you will decide what will potentially make you the most money.
Content websites are different. If I'm going to be writing about something until the cows come home, I'd better at least be pretty interested in the subject, if not downright excited. However, there's nothing that will make me lose interest faster than working on a website concept for a year that doesn't make me any money.
So you will search for what's hot, what is getting a lot of searches, what people are paying good money on Adwords to promote, and THEN you will figure out an angle that interests you. I have a couple free tools that I use to develop keywords. In case you haven't heard me say this before, finding a topic and making a master list of all the keywords associated with it is THE most important thing you will do for your business, both for finding a website concept and deciding what to write about.
I also use the not-free tool Niche Inspector to make my keyword list, but I found two free tools that work quite well:
SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool -
This is an excellent tool for finding the hot keywords and then researching topics for articles.
Google Suggest Labs -
As you type your keywords here, you'll get a nice list of related phrases and the number of search results.
Your hottest topics will have lots of searches per month and fewer competing websites in the search results.
Armed with this advice, these tools, and your keywords, you should have an easy go of deciding on a website concept and what topics to write articles about.
