"Knitting" is too big of a concept I needed to find a profitable niche.
Most people aren't very interested in knitting. That's ok; I'm concerning myself with the people that are interested, if not absolutely passionate. I've read that more people are knitting these days, and that knitting is no longer something only grandmas' do. I've know that for years, since I started knitting at age 11.
Men are knitting in greater numbers than ever, and twenty- and thirty-somethings are picking up needles and yarn as well. One of my favorite actresses, Julia Roberts, has helped make knitting trendy and chic as she has been seen knitting between takes on the movie set. And she will be starring in the movie "The Friday Night Knitting Club" sometime in the coming year.
But...back to my website. It's so much fun to digress though. The process of prioritizing my keywords and developing them into a web site concept is a daunting task. I take out my trusty calculator and, for each keyword, I divide the number of times the word was searched in the last month (Overture) by the number of competitors' web sites are online (Google). The website with the largest ratio number goes to the top of the list.
This process took me days because of the sheer number of words on my list. However, when I was done it was clear what would get me the most traffic and make me the most money. The words at the top of my list were all about free knitting patterns and the titles of specific knitting books. I would build a website around developing knitting patterns to give away for free, and I would write book reviews. My affiliate links would be for books, yarn, and other knitting supplies such as needles, knitting bags, and so on.
But I have a huge list of topics for articles and web pages, and I know what order to write them in. It's like having a shopping list ready for whenever you decide you're ready to go to the store. Take the guesswork out of it. Your website content "shopping list" is ready to go; write an article, sprinkle the keywords throughout, and your target prospects will find you. (Promotion tips come later...)
I found a designer-copycat handbag distributor with an affiliate program and decided on a webpage concept (take a look at the first completed page using that concept) that will include a free pattern, suggested yarn, and a handbag that can double as a knitting bag large enough for that project. I've been know to carry my knitting around in a plastic grocery sack, a cloth grocery sack, or a tacky pink striped beach bag. What a cool idea, I can buy a very inexpensive but classy-looking handbag and also use it as a knitting bag. I can empty my knitting into a basket when I want to use the bag as a handbag. Double-duty and a cheap price means my customers can rationalize a new handbag for almost every knitting project. Oh joy. I think I'm hooked, I know others will be too.
So be creative with your keywords, affiliate programs, and site design. If you think outside of the box, you'll find new uses for old concepts and build yourself a totally unique website.
